Solar screen
What is a solar inverter?
A solar inverter is the central processing unit of any solar PV system. Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity when exposed to sunlight – but homes, businesses and the electricity grid all run on alternating current (AC). An inverter converts DC power from the solar panels into AC power that can be used immediately, fed into the grid, or stored in batteries for later use.
More than power conversion.
WEG Africa inverters intelligently manage battery charging and discharging, switch seamlessly between solar, battery and grid power, monitor performance in real time via WEG PV Cloud, and keep users informed through the web and mobile app.
Hybrid vs on-grid – what's the difference?
Hybrid inverters connect to solar panels and batteries, storing excess energy for use during outages or at night. On-grid inverters connect directly to the grid, without battery storage, and shut down during outages.

Innovative solar technology
How solar inverters work
Power Conversion
Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity from sunlight. A solar inverter converts this variable DC power into stable alternating current (AC) at 50 Hz for use in homes, businesses and the grid.
MPPT Technology
WEG Africa hybrid solar inverters use advanced MPPT technology to continuously maximise solar output, adapting to changing sunlight, weather and shading conditions.
Solar Potential
Africa has one of the world's best solar resources, with 4–6 peak sun hours a day across most of sub-Saharan Africa. A correctly sized WEG inverter and solar system can maximise energy savings.
The WEG solar advantage
The benefits of WEG Africa solar inverters
WEG Africa solar inverters are engineered specifically for Africa’s energy landscape – built to withstand high temperatures, dust and humidity while delivering consistent performance.
Energy independence & load-shedding resilience
Reliable backup power through seamless switching between solar, battery and grid.
Predictable energy cost savings
Use solar by day and battery power at night to reduce electricity costs from day one.
Engineered for African conditions

How to choose
Selecting the right inverter
Here is a practical guide to the key factors to consider.
Single-phase or three-phase?
Most South African homes have single-phase 230 V supply – use a 5–10.5 kW inverter. Commercial premises with three-phase 400 V supply require 15 kW and above. Check your meter and distribution board first.
Do you need battery storage?
If load-shedding resilience is a priority, choose a hybrid inverter. If your goal is purely to reduce daytime costs, an on-grid inverter may suffice. Most South African buyers opt for hybrid.
Size your inverter to your load
A typical South African home (15–25 kWh/day) suits a 5–10.5 kW hybrid. A medium commercial facility (100–300 kWh/day) suits 30–125 kW. Your WEG Africa installer will perform a detailed energy audit.
Consider scalability
WEG Africa systems support additional battery modules and panels as your energy needs grow – protecting your investment and enabling easy future expansion.
